What is orange wine? Does it refer to a wine made with oranges or a mimosa cocktail? No, it is something entirely different. It is a white wine made by leaving the grape skins and seeds in contact with the juice, creating a deep orange-hued wine.

So where exactly does the orange wine come from? The process of making orange wines is very old, but the reinvigoration of this ancient process has only come about in the last 20 years. They are still very rare, but many countries have growing interest in this natural winemaking style, such as Italy, Slovenia, Georgia, the United States, and of course France, in the region of Jura.

The orange wine is fast becoming a favourite among wine buffs and foodies after flooding supermarket shelves and top restaurants in the UK.

Think of it this way: If you look forward to a rosé as a refreshing alternative to red wine, orange wines are the reverse: They’re chilled but with higher levels of tannins, meaning they’re white wines complex enough to stand up to red meat.

People are becoming more adventurous, especially the younger generations. They're less put off by what their wines look like, and more willing to try something new. So let’s start with the orange wine !
